The Alliance Française was created in 1883 in Paris to encourage the propagation of the French language and culture and to foster friendly relations between France and the rest of the world.
We are a non-governmental, nonprofit organization with the largest network of French language and cultural centers in the world.
There are 1,200 Alliance chapters in 112 countries, including 140 chapters in the United States, serving over 400,000 students. The French language is spoken on five continents and by more than 180 million people.
Here in America, the mission of the Alliance Française is to promote understanding, exchange, and friendship between France and other French-speaking countries, and the USA.
