Alegria (Spanish for happiness) is what our group is all about.
Ballet Folklorico Alegria was founded in October 2002 by two elementary school teachers, to give children from low socioeconomic families the opportunity to build self-esteem, cultural awareness and provide a positive outlet and environment for them.
Our dancers range in age from 5 to 20 years old. The program is free to all dancers and the instructors volunteer their time and knowledge when practicing and performing.
The group is solely supported by fund raising, donations and proceeds from presentations.
We want our dancers to know that with hard work and perseverance; they can become who they aspire to be. In the last few years, our group has proudly performed at the Smithsonian Institute's Culturefest, Disneyland Magic Music Days, Knott's Berry Farm, the Christmas Mariachi Festival at US Airways Center, Phoenix Suns Half-time show, AZ Diamondbacks, for the President of Mexico during his visit to Phoenix, the Fiesta Bowl and Parada del Sol parades, as well as numerous corporate, community and private events.
Ballet Folklorico Alegria is under the direction of Dayana Ledezma & Selene Mendez.
