More about Blackwood Educational Land Institute

In the 1970s, Wendell Berry commented on the transition of agriculture to an industry: “We are eating thoughtlessly, as no other entire society ever has been able to do.”

At last, we see folks rejecting cheap and convenient food and demanding healthful, nutrient-rich food. We are restoring a collaborative relationship between home and farm. We are revitalizing thoughtful eating. After a 50-year decline, the tide is turning.

Blackwood Educational Land Institute is at the forefront of this revolution. For two decades, we have been teaching children and their caregivers where food comes from, how it works to nourish our bodies, how we can develop a heartfelt reverence for the land, and how agriculture is more than just a business. It is a life-support system!

In addition to the demand for healthful, nutrient-rich food, there is also a growing interest in farm education among young men and women.

In Texas, Blackwood Land is uniquely positioned to attract these young men and women who want to learn to farm, who want to learn best practices, and who want to be sure they can financially support their families.

We are ready to teach young adults how to farm sustainably, in harmony with our natural resources, and preserving the environment we are passing to our children.

We are ready to teach children how to make smart food choices, and this will help make them informed citizens.

We are ready to teach educators about the importance of nutritional foods, seasonal diets, and sustainable agriculture so those teaching our children can positively and exponentially impact our future generation.

We are ready to bow to Wendell Berry, thank him for his clarion call, and show him that we are doing our part to teach people how to eat mindfully, healthfully, and sustainably.
