Founded in 1944 by Pulitzer Prize nominated author and naturalist, Robert Sparks Walker, the Chattanooga Audubon Society is the area's oldest conservancy organization and works to preserve Chattanooga's natural and historical treasures.
When it was first preserved, Audubon Acres, was a small family farm nearly two miles outside the city of Chattanooga. A manpower shortage during the war left too few hands available to maintain the farm and led Walker's siblings to suggest selling it. With the help of E.Y. Chapin, Sarah Key Patten, and other supporters, the society was able to buy Walker's siblings' share of the land in order to preserve it as a wildlife sanctuary.
