Chia, also known as Salvia hispanica, is a Latin American plant recognized as part of the mint family. "Chia" means "strength" and these tiny black and white seeds were used during Mayan and Aztec times as an energy booster because of their concentrated content of fiber, protein, antioxidants, and healthy omega-3 fatty acids.
Chia seeds are an easy, inexpensive, and low-calorie addition to a healthy, well-balanced diet and can be included in a healthy diet in many ways, including sprinkling them on salads, soups, and yogurt, mixing them into smoothies, or as a vegan substitute for egg in baking.
