Clover Club

It is set forth in the Charter of the Clover Club that: “We have associated ourselves together for the maintenance of a Club for Social Enjoyment, the Cultivation of Literary Tastes and the Encouragement of Hospitable Intercourse.” The founders of the club builded better than they knew, for the club has not only furnished “social enjoyment, cultivated literary tastes and encouraged hospitable intercourse,” but it has become sacred to joy, mirth and good fellowship. Over its portal is written: “Who enters here leaves care behind, leaves sorrow behind, leaves petty envies and jealousies behind.

It is the mission of The Clover Club to drain the beneficent chalices of its own perennial blooms, and hold them, as antidotes and specifics, to the lips of those poisoned with care; to send the generous blood through veins numbed with sorrow, to quicken heart and pulse till all the being wakened into joy and life takes on a rosy hue of existence, and the atmosphere is purified and sweetened with fragrance. It is the mission of The Clover Club to demolish the altars of Despair and erect upon the site a temple for the deity of Hope.

The Clover Club is an earthly paradise where all men are equal in the sympathy and communion of fraternal fellowship; the bonds of common brotherhood, the inspiration of kindred spirits; where pride fuses from the brow and haughtiness from the eye; where wealth and fame and great scholarly attainments, voluntarily doffing their exclusiveness, mingle with humbler ranks on one common plane of universal equality; in one purpose to promote the general good; to add to the general fund of amusement; to laugh and be laughed at and with; where Wisdom comes down from lofty pedestal and Dignity from dizzy stilts and join in the rollicking levity of rejuvenation.
