Dynamic Shooting with a Handgun Module Descriptions

Module -1 “Introduction to Dynamic Shooting”
Module 1 is the foundation to all “follow-up” training involving dynamic shooting. This course will begin with a brief discussion built around comparisons between shooting dynamically and other shooting disciplines. This class will also cover the fundamentals of shooting, and the difference in mindset versus technique. The 3-hour module will conduct a trouble shooting matrix to provide professional analytical feedback to students to assist in increasing their speed, efficiency, and overall shooting capability. The analytical process will involve grip, trigger control, rapid sight acquisition, rapid engagements from ready positions, and recoil control to develop an efficient shooting dynamic. Students will participate in drills that require a safe and reliable draw, following instruction and critique on the way to mastering the draw from the holster. Through this course, Colonial Tactical provides minimal training requirements for the Virginia Concealed Carry Permit, as well as the Draw Qualification Card through Colonial Shooting Academy. There are no pre-requisites for this class.

Module-2 “Mastering the Draw”
Module 2 is dedicated to mastering the draw from a variety of positions. During the course of instruction a professional analysis of all aspects of the draw will be provided. This course will assist students in developing the skills necessary to engage targets that are not in their initial field of view from the draw. This diagnostic training process will increase the students’ capabilities of two-handed, strong-hand only, and weak-hand only draw techniques. This course does not require one specific holster for its training, but provides training for the holster that the student utilizes; whether drawing from a tactical holster, duty holster, concealed carry holster, etc. The pre-requisite for the course is “The Introduction to Dynamic Shooting” or the 8-hour Dynamic Shooting Course conducted through Clark Consulting at CSA.

Module-3 “Dynamic Reloads and Malfunctions”
The third module in Dynamic Shooting with a Handgun, solely focuses on providing students with a skillset of gun manipulations during various types of reloads and malfunctions. This training process will develop increased efficiency and the capability to solve problems associated with reloading and determining corrective actions for malfunctions. These techniques will address two-handed manipulations, as well as strong-hand and weak-hand only reloads and malfunctions. Students will develop the ability to conduct improvised gun manipulation for solving problems associated with reloading and clearing malfunctions related to dynamic handgun operation. This course will build on training covered in the previous modules, and requires two pre-requisites: “Introduction to Dynamic Shooting” and “Mastering the Draw”.

Module-4 “Dynamic Shooting from Cover and Concealment”
This course will concentrate on providing professional training on effective techniques implemented while utilizing cover and concealment. Instruction will include but not be limited to all tactical, competitive, and personal self-defense considerations and employing the use of cover and concealment. Students will learn techniques to clear around multiple types of cover, transition to various positions, and transition from one point of cover to another. During the course of instruction students will develop a skillset for improvised shooting positions such as strong-hand only and weak-hand only, as well as dominant and non-dominant problem solving from cover. This training will add to the foundation from the techniques provided in the previous three modules. The pre-requisites required for this course are “Introduction to Dynamic Shooting”, “Mastering the Draw”, and “Dynamic Reloads and Malfunctions”.

Module-5 “Shooting on the Move”
While utilizing and building on the skills taught in previous modules, this module will provide professional training that will focus on effective and efficient techniques implemented while shooting on the move. During this training, students will be exposed to traditional grip, strong-hand only, weak-hand only engagements while shooting on the move. Students will develop effective techniques to engage targets while closing the gap, retreating off-line, lateral movement, strong side and weak side engagements, as well as multiple target engagements. The pre-requisites required for this class are: “Introduction to Dynamic Shooting”, “Mastering the Draw”, “Dynamic Reloads and Malfunctions”, and “Dynamic Shooting from Cover and Concealment”.

Module-6 “Low Light Handgun”
This module will focus on effective and efficient techniques implemented while shooting in low light conditions, and continuing to apply techniques from previous modules. Students will develop techniques to utilize ambient light, gun-mounted lights, and detached light sources. Students will understand use of direct and indirect lighting techniques as well as utilizing distractive lighting techniques to engage targets. This module requires the following pre-requisites: “Introduction to Dynamic Shooting”, “Mastering the Draw”, “Dynamic Reloads and Malfunctions”, “Dynamic Shooting from Cover and Concealment”, and “Shooting on the Move”.
