On that day John H Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson and three other gang thugs robbed the Merchants Bank. They also shot down and killed South Bend Police Officer Howard C Wagner. Ofc. Wagner heard all the screaming from the corner of Michigan and Jefferson where he was directing traffic. He approached the screaming and activity only be be shot down. Reports are that the State Theater across the street still has bullets in the face of the building.
Prior to the robbery it is reported that Dillinger and his gang stopped by the Dainty Maid bake Shop located in 1934 ar 123 N Michigan Street checking for additional officers in the area.
