More about El Paso Mission Trail

The El Paso Mission Trail is a nine mile corridor from the Ysleta Mission to the San Elizario Chapel. The history dates back to the arrival of Don Juan de Onate in 1598 to the area and the "Birthplace of the American Southwest." There was a ceremony, "La Toma" (taking possession of the land), there was rejoicing, raising of the standard, they gave thanks, they enjoyed a comedy in the afternoon. The Camino Real de Tierra Adentro was established.
The three churchs are the oldest buildings in Texas. San Elizario was the first county seat of El Paso County in 1850. History of Billy the Kid, the Salt Wars, the Apache Peace Camp are all part of the vast history of the corridor.
Now the corridor is a cultural historic area, that has added Art to the San Elizario Historic District, which is the only Art District in the El Paso County area. It hosts over 80 annual events.
See It! Feel It! Believe It!
