The Initial Attack Experience is 24-54 hour multi-stage event designed to test your physical abilities as well as sharpen your mental acuity during those times where sharpness is difficult to maintain but critically necessary to complete the objective. The endurance nature of the Initial Attack Experience is in the fluid and transitory challenges that it presents, and your ability to respond to those challenges effective and efficiently in those moments most difficult to achieve effective decisions and actions. It is easy to survive a mindless task by "shutting" down and "running on automation", where the only thought you have is to put one foot in front of the other, or continue to carry that weight. Mentally detaching yourself from the physical stress is easy if that's all you have to worry about.
However, when the objectives change, the environment shifts, and unforseen challenges arise where immediate action is required, you are not afforded the luxury of tuning out or "coasting", especially when the lives of those around you are at stake and the success of the objective is in jeopardy. The secondary purpose of the Initial Attack Experience is to offer up training in fire management in a wildland setting where participants learn the skills and knowledge necessary to survive and excel in wildland fire management. Under the supervision of our qualified and experienced staff and advisors, participants will go through the IHC Critical Training process that will be condensed for the Initial Attack Experience. Here the participants will learn the 10 Standard Firefighting Orders, the 18 Watch Out Situations, chain of command via ICS (Incident Command Structure), Risk Management Process, Navigation, identification/mitigation of hazards and risks, field medical triage, line construction techniques, and physical fitness training.
The biggest difference between the Initial Attack Experience and other endurance events is that through our program, you learn how each skill is applicable beyond wildland fire and into your daily lives. You learn that there is always a greater purpose for your actions and to tap into that greater purpose as you progress and live beyond the ordinary.
