Flying Anvil Forge: Olaf Batt and Holly Fisher
Olaf Batt and Holly Fisher have finished their first major work of art. The piece is titled “Warbonnet” . “Warbonnet” took over a year to finish with countless hours being invested in its creation. It is made from used hoof rasps which are a very high carbon alloy, hard to forge, hard to cut. Olaf estimates that the hoof rasps used for the warbonnet represent over 1,000 shoeings, 1,000 horses. Other materials used are A-36 steel and baling wire. “Warbonnet” was sold to a private collector before it was even finished.
The collaboration is unique in that farriers and ornamental blacksmiths, although having much in common rarely work together. Holly met Olaf because she needed therapeutic horseshoeing for her horse, the two got to talking smithing and after some hours in the smithy, found out that they made a good team.
Together, they have formed “Flying Anvil Forge” which is located in Mounds, OK. At Flying Anvil Forge the modus operandi is: “We want to work hard, but not too hard”. Olaf and Holly work on projects most every weekend. Because of their day jobs they have the freedom to make what they want to make and selectively accept commissions for artwork.
Olaf, originally from Switzerland, came to Oklahoma in the 70’s to attend the Oklahoma Horseshoeing School. He met his wife Nancy soon after and the rest is history. Olaf has carved a niche for himself in therapeutic sporthorse shoeing world and is highly sought after because of his skill and experience. Horses love him and so do people.
Holly holds a Master’s in Fine Arts with a concentration in sculpture from The University of Montana. After several years of struggling to support herself as an artist and educator, Holly took a job as Safety Coordinator for S&R Compression. She’s happy to have the freedom to create works of art for art’s sake.
Both artists are avid equestrians and prefer Dressage as their chosen sport.
