Forsyth County has enjoyed a vibrant community gardening culture for over 250 years. The nation's first community garden was founded here in 1759, in what is now Historic Bethabara. Today, Forsyth County is home to over 120 community gardens. These gardens are found in schoolyards, at religious centers, on public property, and even in people's backyards.
In response to this strong culture of community gardening, Forsyth County Cooperative Extension established the Community Gardening Program to support and grow the community garden movement here in Forsyth County.
The Forsyth Community Gardening Program offers support services to developing, new, and established gardens. Resources currently offered include:
- Horticulture, community organizing and sustainable gardening classes
- Seeds and starter plants from the Growing Gardens Seed Bank
-Tools for lending from the Tool Lending Shed
-Soil testing and advising
-Community Garden mentors to support gardens
-Networking events to bring community garden groups together
-Collaboration with neighborhood pantries to increase neighborhood food security
-Advocacy for community gardens
