Fort Defiance, the 18th century home of Revolutionary War hero William Lenoir, is now a fort in name only. General William Lenoir built his home between 1788 and 1792 on the former site of the fort, which was originally designed to protect settlers from the early Native Americans in the area. The home of William Lenoir has been fully restored to its late eighteenth, early nineteenth century grandeur and features over 300 pieces of original furnishings, textiles and household artifacts. Also on the grounds are a smokehouse, reconstructed kitchen, the family cemetery and authentic gardens.

This exquisite 18th century home was build by Revolutionary War hero, General William Lenoir and named for a frontier fort that stood nearby. The home has been fully restored to its late 18th, early 19th century splendor and houses over 300 original furnishings and historic household items.

Enjoy a costumed guided tour and step back into the lives of our forefathers. Imagine a winter's night spent nestled under handmade quilts. Experience frontier life in an authentic 18th century setting.

Stroll the grounds and discover remnants of a two hundred plus year-old English boxwood garden, a smokehouse and a reconstructed kitchen. Encounter plant life unique to this site: a 200 year old hybrid Chestnut tree, a Bald Cypress and the state certified largest American Beech tree in North Carolina. Walk through the family cemetery and let the oldest grave (1785), that of daughter Elizabeth Lenoir, evoke the struggles and triumphs of frontier life.
