History of Holy Angels

Founded in 1956, and staffed by the Sisters of Saint Francis in Philadelphia, the school first opened its doors on September 17, 1956, and was the first Catholic School in the Newark area. The building first housed 303 children in 8 classrooms. As work was being finished on the school, the parish continued to outgrow Saint John’s Church in Newark. The building attached to the school became Holy Angels Church and served the community as a church until 2004. The building of a new church began in 1999 and was dedicated in July 2004. In February 2006, work began on the old worship space to covert it back to the gymnasium it was originally planned to be. On September 30, 2006, the community was very excited to dedicate the new Holy Angels Gymnasium/Community Center as it celebrated its 50th Anniversary as a school.Today it continues to thrive with 385 students in 18 classrooms. The school services children from Newark, Bear, Middletown, Hockessin, Wilmington, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. There are over forty-five dedicated and professional faculty and staff serving our families, guided by the principal. The school, under the direction of the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington, offers a complete academic program and Holy Angels was most recently accredited by the Commission on Elementary Schools of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Acknowledging the role of parent as the primary teacher, the school takes great pride in fostering, developing, and enhancing the family values and spiritual growth of its students through its strong religious and academic program.The Home and School Association is also a very active functioning organization that adds to the non-academic program with many social and creative activities. Within the parish there is a very large athletic association, under the guidance of the CYM (Catholic Youth Ministry), that involves students in a variety of fall, winter, and spring sports.Since its beginning, the school has been an integral part of the parish life, and continues today steep in the traditions of the Catholic Church. Our emphasis is on the whole student, living and learning in Christ.
