The Department of African Studies at Howard University is one of the oldest African Studies departments in the United States, housed in one of the largest historically Black institutions in the United States. The Department of African Studies offers B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in African Studies.
The African Studies and Research Program was established in 1953 to offer the Master of Arts degree at Howard University. In 1969, the unit was placed in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, offering both M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in African Studies. Howard University is the first university in the United States to offer a Ph.D. in African Studies, and the only one to offer African Studies as an undergraduate major.
