Laguna Beach Lawn Bowling Club History:

In early 1931, Harl Kittle moved to Laguna Beach from Beverly Hills. Mr. Kittle was a member of the Beverly Hills Lawn Bowling Club. He set out on a search for a house and had hopes of Laguna Beach building a bowling green. By March of that year he was making progress.

First steps resulted in a new amusement for Lagunans and taken Thursday, Feb. 26 when Kittle was host to Andrew S. Hall, Dr. L. F. Mallow, William G. Schmelzel and Harry Arm-strong at Beverly Hills, former home of the host. The purpose being to initiate the guests into the mysteries of bowling and to demonstrate the fascination that the game holds for a large number of persons.

Also in March, Heisler Park which had been the property of Orange County, was deeded to the City of Laguna Beach. Ah, the perfect place for a bowling green. The City agreed.

In April, the Laguna Beach Lawn Bowling Club was officially organized with seventy-five members. It was the largest club in southern California. By May the membership had grown to ninety-five. By July of that year, the new greens were being mowed. In November the greens opened for the first games. ( Courtesy of Linda Jahraus)
