More about Leeds Arts Council

Our History

The Leeds Arts Council was organized in 1985 as part of the Jefferson County Community Schools. By 1992, the LAC became a separate entity, gaining 501(c)(3) status in 1993.

By May 2000, an existing building in the historic downtown area was renovated to become the Leeds Theater and Arts Center.

Theatrical productions were the initial focus, but the arts council has since added several other types of events to its programming, including fine arts demonstrations, classes, and shows, monthly gallery exhibits, story-telling, vocal and instrumental concerts, poetry readings, holiday events, and children’s theater workshops.

We are actively involved in the community and work to foster a sense of creativity in the Leeds and surrounding communities. The Arts Council continues to move forward into the future with high expectations for continued growth of appreciation of the arts in our town and surrounding area.

Our Mission

We strive to build and maintain, through a non-profit plan, a program for the advancement of the arts. We wish to cultivate an interest in the arts and to provide an opportunity and place for participation in the arts for the community. Our hope is to foster and encourage public appreciation for the arts and teaching of art, drama, theatre, music history, and art appreciation.

The Leeds Arts Council moves forward into the future with confidence and with high expectations for the continued growth of the arts in Leeds. With the much appreciated support of individuals, businesses, organizations and foundations, our future success is bright indeed.
