Lynchburg College is a private, independent, residential college located on 250 beautiful acres in central Virginia.

The student body numbers 2,800 undergraduate and graduate students. LC offers 40 undergraduate majors, 57 minors, 13 pre-professional programs, and 18 graduate degrees, all supported by a strong liberal arts foundation.

But what makes us unique?

Founding

Lynchburg College was founded as Virginia Christian College in 1903 by Dr. Josephus Hopwood, a pioneer in Christian coeducation, and is one of the oldest coeducational institutions in Virginia. A fully accredited residential college, LC is affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), a denomination with a tradition of welcoming persons of all faiths and denominations.

Our location

LC is located in the foothills of the spectacular Blue Ridge Mountains in central Virginia. There’s no shortage of hikes, climbs, rivers, and streams. If you’re more the city type, head to Washington, D.C. (180 miles) or Richmond, Va. (120 miles).

Campus

Located on 264 acres, the beautifully landscaped campus is a showplace, comprising more than 40 buildings, many of Georgian-style architecture. The Graduate Health Sciences Building is a short walk from the main campus and houses the Doctor of Physical Therapy and the Master of Physician Assistant Medicine programs.

Our active student body

Our students are active – really active. 70% play varsity, intramural, or club sports. They contribute approximately 70,000 hours of community service each year. And they join more than 80 clubs and organizations, fraternities, and sororities.

Through Vision 2020, the Lynchburg College Strategic Plan, we clearly state our intention to enhance the signature Lynchburg experience that generations of students and alumni hold dear. We will do this by pursuing our primary aspiration to be nationally recognized as the leader for student engagement in the classroom, athletics, and leadership.

Faculty

Lynchburg College faculty are outstanding scholars who are leaders in their disciplines. Of the 190 full-time faculty members, 77% are tenured or tenure track. The student-faculty ratio is 11:1, which allows for personal attention and student-faculty collaborative research

Student Body

There are 2,200 undergraduate and 600 graduate students representing 38 states and 15 foreign countries.

Student Profile

Of the 2,200 undergraduate students, 40 percent are male; 60 percent are female; 22 percent are multicultural; and 75 percent live on campus.

Academics

Undergraduate programs comprise 40 undergraduate majors, 57 minors, and 13 pre-professional programs.

Graduate Studies include the Doctor of Physical Therapy, Doctor of Education in Leadership Studies, Master of Arts in history and music, Master of Business Administration (online and on campus), Master of Education in seven concentrations, Master of Criminal Justice Leadership, Master of Nonprofit Leadership, Master of Public Health, Master of Science in Athletic Training, Master of Science in Nursing (online).

Athletics

The varsity athletic program provides opportunities for men and women to compete in NCAA Division III and the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) in 21 sports. LC has won 177 ODAC titles and produced 242 All-Americans. In 2014, LC’s women’s soccer team won the NCAA Division III championship, the first team national championship in the history of the College. LC students can also play a variety of intramural and club sports.

Shellenberger Field, named for LC’s legendary soccer coach, is state-of-the-art with artificial turf, an eight-lane track, night lighting and a 3,000-spectator capacity stadium.

Tuition and Fees

Tuition, fees, room and board costs for the 2016-2017 school year total $45,940 (assumes a residential student, who selects the base meal-plan and lives in a traditional residence hall.

Financial Aid

At LC, 98 percent of students receive financial aid, and 70 percent receive an academic award.
The average financial aid package (scholarships, loans, and work study) totals $22,000.

National Recognition

Lynchburg College has acquired a national reputation as an institution that offers quality educational opportunities while building the character and leadership ability of its students.

Claytor Nature Study Center

Claytor Nature Study Center in Bedford County is a 470-acre outdoor classroom and laboratory dedicated to the study and appreciation of our natural environment, including the A. Boyd Claytor III Education and Research Facility; Belk Astronomical Observatory; Cloverlea, an antebellum farmhouse with landscaped gardens; numerous natural features; and the Chandler Eco-Lodge.

Daura Gallery

The Daura Gallery houses LC’s art collection including paintings, drawings, prints, and sculpture by Pierre Daura and other American and European artists. Special exhibitions and events are held throughout the academic year. Admission is free.
