More about McKendree U.M.C.

Background of McKendree Methodist Church------
Established in 1823, McKendree Methodist Church began meeting in a log millhouse on Crowdabout Creek in Southwest Morgan County, Alabama. Local families met together, bonding in their agrarian community to serve God and develop a Christian fellowship. The congregation has survived the better part of two centuries, seeking God’s will through both hardship and prosperity.
McKendree Church now meets in its 4th building, a brick structure finished in 1947 at the corner of Highway 55 and Newcut Road in the Massey Community. Both church and community have been through many changes. Originally a farming community, Massey once boasted two stores and a gin, but now the area is more a bedroom community for North Alabama industries. Population numbers have changed, the average age of inhabitants varied, and Massey is very different economically and socially. McKendree members have faithfully supported their church through those changes, though many are now retired, and on fixed incomes. In the last decade, Massey community has begun new development. Large numbers of a Mennonite group have purchased properties and began farming lands once more. Though this change is, of course, a positive one for our community, it probably has no potential for growth of McKendree Church attendance.
In the late seventies, McKendree’s membership felt the need to respond in a personal way when they perceived needs both locally and abroad. They organized a missions committee to help local families in distress with rent, groceries, and utility bills. They also planned to supplement other local congregations when needs exceeded what one group could give. The committee took a special interest in SIFAT, perhaps because this organization teaches the skills and work ethics that are most appreciated by the rural farmers and workers of the Massey community. The church budgeted to give regularly to SIFAT and also support other causes directly. Since that time, McKendree has continued personally sharing time and resources as God leads, and has always felt blessed because of their efforts.
There have been financial hardships in the church as the members weathered “hard times” during years of poor farming. There have been times that McKendree congregation endured disappointing leadership. There have often been drops in membership as younger generations moved away for better jobs and opportunities. During the 1980’s Sunday School attendance was regularly over 100, but now less than 50 attend each week. The membership consists of local residents and of descendants of previous members of the church. Their bond is strong as is their resolve to stand for Christ in the community. McKendree’s nature is warm and supportive, both within their walls and outside the fellowship.
The strengths of McKendree Methodist Church have developed through its history. The trials the members endured have helped them grow closer to God and to each other as His family. Members are willing to commit themselves. They show up to work, they give money and they share what they have. They have learned to be obedient to authority, even when it fails them, and to trust God to lead.
The goal of McKendree Methodist Church is growth, not just in numbers, but in spiritual growth. Members strive to envelop all present with God’s love, and the church is known for their caring actions toward all community members in times of sorrow and loss.
