Incorporated in 1973, and established in 1974, the Metropolitan Washington Ear, Inc., (MWE) is a nonprofit organization providing reading and information services for blind, visually impaired, and physically disabled people who cannot effectively read print, see plays, watch television programs and films, or view museum exhibits.
MWE's free services strive to substitute hearing for seeing, improving the lives of people with limited or no vision by enabling them to be well-informed, fully productive members of their families, their communities, and the working world.
MWE is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization incorporated under the laws of the state of Maryland. We've been providing quality services to the visually impaired adults throughout Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia since 1974. Our all-volunteer Board of Directors is composed of visually impaired listeners, volunteers who participate in our program, and a cross-section of business and community leaders.
Metropolitan Washington Ear (MWE) enhances the lives and increases the independence of persons in the Washington region who have limited or no vision by substituting hearing for seeing and providing immediate, independent, and free access to essential printed news and information that is readily available to sighted individuals. MWE is committed to providing all its services without charge in order to serve the full range of its targeted population, regardless of socio-economic status.
