Nestled in the hills of western Massachusetts on 34 acres of gardens, orchards, pastures and woods, Montague Retreat Center borders thousands of acres of wildlife management area. So despite its easy accessibility (20 minutes from UMass Amherst and I-91), the atmosphere is very peaceful and remote.
South-facing fields lined by magnificent maple groves fall off suddenly into a deep ravine at the confluence of the Saw Mill River and Spaulding Brook. The forest turns cool and dark under enormous pines. The Robert Frost Trail is within a stone’s throw.
A state-of-the-art barn with geo-thermal heating and cooling, bamboo floors, exposed beams and soaring ceilings provides workshop space for up to 100 people for day or evening events. By next spring, we expect to have a functioning commercial kitchen and accommodations for residential retreats of up to 20 people. The long-term plan envisages expansion to accommodate 54, including restoration of the farmhouse, a bathhouse, and cabins in the woods.
