Montefiore Medical Center, in the Norwood section of the Bronx, New York, is a teaching hospital of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. It is named for Moses Montefiore and is one of the 50 largest employers in New York State. In 2016, Montefiore Medical Center was ranked #7 of the 180 New York City metropolitan area hospitals by U.S. News & World Report.HistoryMontefiore was founded by "leaders of New York’s Jewish community" as the Montefiore Home for Chronic Invalids, and opened at Avenue A and East 84th Street in Manhattan on October 26, 1884, Moses Montefiore's 100th birthday. In its early years, it housed mostly patients with tuberculosis and other chronic illnesses. After growing out of its original building, the hospital moved uptown to Broadway and West 138th Street in 1888. It was renamed Montefiore Hospital for Chronic Diseases in 1901, and moved again, to its current location in the Bronx and was renamed Montefiore Home and Hospital for Chronic Diseases in 1913. It was again renamed, as Montefiore Hospital for Chronic Diseases in 1920, as Montefiore Hospital and Medical Center on October 11, 1964, and as the Henry and Lucy Moses Division of Montefiore Medical Center in 1981 when it took over the daily operations of Einstein Hospital.
