Ozark National Forest, Arkansas

The Ozark-St. Francis National Forest Supervisor's office is located at 605 W. Main Street in Russellvile, Arkansas. (The St. Francis National Forest is a small holding in the Delta region of eastern Arkansas near Helena; it is administered by the Ozark National Forest Supervisor.)

The Ozark National Forest itself covers more than one million acres, mostly in northwest Arkansas. The southernmost portion runs along the Arkansas River Valley south to the Ouachita Mountains. The northern boundary extends beyond Lone Rock to Matney Mountain in Stone County. On the west the forest patchwork touches Oklahoma.The Ozark National Forest was established on March 6, 1908 by Presidential proclamation. Diverse flora in the region include more than 500 species of trees and woody plants. Hardwoods occupy 65 percent of the forests; the oak-hickory types dominate.

While most Americans think that national forests are fully protected, the national forests have always encouraged logging, especially clear-cutting. Visitors to Ozark National Forest may see logging trucks on the roads and highways. Be careful!
