The Paintsville Fire Department was established in May of 1926 by order of Mayor E.E. Archer and City Clerk John G. Newman. The members of the fire department was compromised of members of the American Legion, Post 117, headquartered here in Paintsville. City Marshall, William H. Ward, was appointed the towns first fire chief by city council until and permanent fire chief could be found. John H. Chandler was appointed the first permanent fire chief on July 19, 1926.

Since 1926, the Paintsville Fire Department has significantly evolved into an all hazards department providing fire suppression, rescue services, hazardous materials response, fire prevention, education and basic and advanced life support emergency medical services.

Our department is compromised of a group of highly trained and dedicated firefighters, emergency medical technicians and paramedics providing life saving services to the citizens and visitors of Paintsville and Johnson County, Kentucky.
