PHOS

Phos. Weird name for a student ministry, right? Well, give us a minute to explain ourselves.

If you didn't realize, the Bible wasn't originally written in the English language. Instead, most of the Old Testament was written in Hebrew, and the New Testament was written in Koine Greek. "Phos" is a Koine Greek word - and it translates in English to "light."

In the New Testament, Jesus says this word a lot. He uses it to refer to Himself, to His followers, and to the free gift of eternal life that He offers. For instance, in John 8:12, Jesus said: "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." Each time the word "light" appears in that verse, the actual Greek word used is "phos."

Jesus is telling us that He is the light, the hope, the satisfaction, the peace, and the answer that the world is looking for in this verse - and that little word, "phos," represents how Jesus is all of these things for those who place their faith in Him.

As a student ministry, our goal is to point middle and high school students to this truth, that Jesus is the "phos" that we are all looking for. And so we we relentlessly proclaim the Gospel, the good news of who Jesus is and what He done for us through His death, burial, and resurrection. We express this commitment to Gospel-centeredness with a simple catchphrase: making the main thing, the main thing.
