More about Salmon Community Garden

Salmon is an isolated, rural community with one of the highest child food insecurity and poverty rates in Idaho. We need to work together as a community to connect and engage those in need with the resources available to them.

One of our best resources: the Salmon Community Garden!

Food independence and food ownership start when individuals know how to grow their own food and have the space to do so.

The Garden was started by Candace Burns as a Heritage Garden, then continued as a free community food garden by Tawna Skinner. Sadie Barrett and others then partnered with other organizations like FFA and Dept. of Justice Probation. In 2013 and 2014 an Americorps Vista Sara Campbell transformed it into what it is today: Low-cost rentable space for the community and free space for non-profits like food banks. In 2015 the garden provided a space for a new business, Sweet Belly Farm, as well as the Calvary Chapel, Dept. of Justice Probation, and local families.
Coordinators of the Garden have mostly been volunteers with minimal time to develop partnerships and sustainability. We want to ensure the future of this important resource! This year the big push is to get a funded garden coordinator position who can help the garden become self-sustainable in the future. Please help us by donating!
