More about School Section Lake Pavilion Project

The Friends of School Section Lake Veterans Park remains committed to restoring the Stone Pavilion to its former dignity as a proud centerpiece of the School Section Lake Veterans Park and representative of all of Mecosta County’s parks.

Originally settled by Isaac Berry in the 1870’s, School Section Lake Veterans Park property was purchased by Mecosta County and was established as part of the county’s park system in 1930. The Stone Pavilion was built the following year to serve as a gathering place overlooking the beach. For the next 80 years, the Pavilion has provided concessions and a recreation center for beach goers and more recently for campers.

Visitors come to the park from many miles away for family reunions, 4th of July events, baseball games, and business and employee picnics. The 4H Lodge and campground and the main campground have been very popular destinations and have been in constant and ongoing use throughout the years. This year was a special one, as it marked the 80th year of the Old Settlers Reunion at School Section Lake Veterans Park.

For a number of reasons, including the difficulties caused by the recent recession, the condition of the Stone Pavilion has severely deteriorated and major renovations are needed. The Park Commission, having many serious maintenance needs throughout its system, cannot currently justify the expenditures needed to renovate the Stone Pavilion (The Mecosta County Park Commission is entirely self-funded and receives no monies from the County treasury).
