More about Scooooder Stones

Scooooder Stones originated from a Florida fence contractor who hated the chert rocks that tore up his equipment and slowed down the job. In December 2014 he began bringing the rocks home.

In 2015 our mentor, a lapidary artist who spent over 50 years traveling the world collecting rocks/stones passed away. We were able to purchase a large quantity of his collection and we have expanded from just Florida Chert to a wide variety of natural stones.

We have learned the properties of our chert rock, how to cut it, polish it and create things with it. It takes up to 6 weeks to create one stone.

It was an exciting day for us when the white ugly stone brought home on the back of trucks and trailers turned out to have such beautiful colors and striations inside.

Chert is a native Florida Rock formed by the sedimentation of organic and inorganic materials (small fossils, molds of shells and fauna) compressed over thousands of years and is sometimes visible in the stone.
Chert was a precious commodity that early people traded and transported long distances.
The edges of broken chert are sharp and retain their sharpness: chert is a very hard and very durable rock and is rated a 7-8 on the Mohs hardness scale. Thousands of years ago people discovered these properties and learned how to break it to make cutting tools such as knife blades, arrowheads, scrapers, and ax heads.
Chert occurs in a wide variety of colors. Continuous color gradients exist between white and black or between cream and brown. Green, yellow and red cherts are also common.
The darker colors can result from inclusions of sediment or organic matter. The name "flint" is often used in reference to the darker colors of chert. The name "jasper" is frequently used for reddish cherts.
