More about Slocomb High School

Slocomb High School was instituted 1901 in a wooden building near the site of the present day Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. In 1925, a larger school was built on Hemby Street, the present location of Slocomb Elementary School. The present building was erected in 1980, and Slocomb Middle School followed in 1988. SHS serves students in grades nine through twelve.

According to Mr. James Bass, a Slocomb alumnus, John B. Davidson came to Slocomb High School as head coach after graduating from college. Coach Davidson painted his team's helmets red to distinguish them from the rest of the area teams' leather helmets. He called his team the Redtops, and the name stuck. At some point, the Indian was adopted as the school's mascot and eventually this Indian became known as the Slocomb Redtop.

Slocomb High School continues a proud tradition of excellence in academics, athletics, and the fine arts. Our students are well-rounded individuals who become productive citizens.
