Smith Ambulance

Originating in April 1983 as a service offered by Smith Funeral Homes of Sugarcreek and Baltic, Ohio, Smith Ambulance Service, Inc. has grown to become the area’s largest ambulance service and medical transportation provider. Owner and President Robert L. Smith, a paramedic with over 35 years of ambulance experience, separated the ambulance service from the funeral homes in 1993 after opening a station in Dover, Ohio

The service expanded to New Philadelphia, Ohio on June 1, 1999; then opened a station in Uhrichsville, Ohio on August 17, 1999 after taking over the emergency medical services in the Twin City area. In June 2002, Smith began operating Smith Ambulance of North East Ohio, Inc. with stations in Wooster and Millersburg.

‌In the spring of 2010, Smith Ambulance of Stark-Summit, Inc. aquired Bartley EMS service of Minerva, Ohio. With this aquisition, the Smith team now serves all of southeastern Stark County, northern Carroll County and western Columbiana County, from their facilities in Minerva and Malvern.

Advanced life support ambulances are staffed 24 hours/day, 365 days/year at each station by highly trained paramedics and emergency medical technicians using the most up to date equipment. In addition to their standard training, Smith Ambulance paramedics are required to be certified in Basic Trauma Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and Neonatal Resuscitation and must attend regularly scheduled continuing education classes. Because training is such an important part of our service, Smith Ambulance Service has it’s own training facility. We provide training to all our employees and any other emergency service provider in our area. Cooperation has always been important to provide the best service possible.

In a continuing effort to provide life saving services to Tuscarawas County and surrounding areas, Smith Ambulance Service, Inc. has entered into a partnership with MedFlight of Ohio to operate a medical helicopter in the region. The flight program is staffed 24 hours/day, 365 days/year with highly trained flight crews to assure rapid transport of critically injured and ill patients.

Smith Ambulance Service has been privileged to provide emergency and non-emergency medical transportation to many residents of northeastern Ohio for the past 25 years. I have personally been involved in ambulance service for the past 40 years and have been extremely proud of the growth of our ambulance service as we have grown from a single ambulance in my funeral home’s garage to operating nine stations in five counties. I am even more proud of the paramedics, emergency medical technicians, dispatchers, billing specialists and our management teams that provide care and service to those that need us.
