Society of Humboldt County Pioneers

The Society of Humboldt County Pioneers was organized in January 1876 by early immigrants to Humboldt County. The Society’s goals include the collection and preservation of information about early settlers, settlements, and the history of the county; and, to provide a forum for educational and social activities. The Society is likely the oldest continually operating organization in the county.

Although the original membership qualification required an ancestor to have lived in Humboldt County before 1855, the current qualification date is one hundred years (1914). That is, if your parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, etc. lived in Humboldt County in 1914 or earlier, you are eligible to join with other descendants of early Humboldt County residents. Current Society membership is more than 130 and includes members whose ancestors were founding members of the Society.

Membership dues are very reasonable, being $2.50 for application and initiation; and, $10.00 per year thereafter.

The Society holds a monthly business and social meeting on the second Friday (except for July and August) at 12:00 noon at the Moose Lodge, 4328 Campton Road in Eureka. A potluck luncheon is followed by a guest speaker. Prospective members are welcome and current members are encouraged to bring guests.

Past meeting presentations have included the building of the Redwood Highway, local earthquakes, the history of Humboldt County aviation, the agriculture industry and the Farm Bureau, local place names, mail service, the history of several local towns, local grocery stores, as well as the recollections of numerous Society members about their families and life in Humboldt County.
