South Dade Garden Club History
In 1924, several women in South Dade County decided to form a garden group.
They felt the need of community identity and cooperation to discuss flowers, trees,
birds, shrubs and aide each other in fighting insects.
When Mrs. Herman Heinlein became superintendent of the Fruit and Spice Park in
1944, the Club moved their meetings to the Park. She established night meetings
so men could also attend and become members.
In 2012, a partnership agreement between the Club and Miami Dade County Fruit &
Spice Park was established to strengthen our long term working relationship. The
South Dade Garden Club supports the Fruit and Spice Park with event sponsorship,
improvement purchases and trees planted in in honor of family and friends and in
memory of deceased members.
The Club has recognized a need for financial assistance for deserving students who
desire a career in horticulture and/or agriculture. Generous scholarships are
awarded annually.
