The Sturbridge PD K9 Unit page is to promote and educate the public about the department's K9 program. The department maintained a K9 unit from the 1970's until 2005 when it was disbanded due to lack of funding. Thanks to a generous grant provided by The Stanton Foundation we were able to bring this invaluable resource back to the community for 2014. This grant is intended to cover the start-up of the program and operating costs for three years.
The unit consists of one K9 team; Officer Dan Hemingway and K9 Vlasko.
K9 Vlasko is a German Shepherd who be used as a dual purpose dog. He will be used for Patrol/Utility Functions as well as Narcotics Detection.
The unit is part of the Operations Division. The unit is overseen by Sgt. Larry Bateman and Lt. Earl Dessert.
