The active ingredient, Dihydroxyacetone (or DHA), is a simple carbohydrate. The DHA in our solution is extracted from sugar beets and sugar cane. Since it not a dye or pigment, it does not penetrate the skin, but simply reacts with the skin’s outermost layer of proteins, resulting in a browning effect. Sunless tanning was first introduced into the consumer marketplace in the 1960s. In 1977, the FDA added DHA to their list of approved cosmetic ingredients.
