Small-group, Multi-modal instruction: Academics are conducted in small, multi-age classes of up to 12 students with two full time teachers. Instruction takes place in three small groups, giving students opportunities to access the same subject matter in a variety of modalities. Curriculum is based on the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. Students are assessed using the NWEA MAP test.
Explicit and embedded social skills instruction: Summit Academy draws on a variety of resources to provide daily social skills instruction to students, addressing everything from hygiene to self-regulation and making friends.
Therapeutic Marital Arts: While students participate in a highly-motivating martial arts program, they focus on cross-body movements which develop connections between the left and right hemispheres of the brain. They learn to manage personal space, control impulses, develop focus, and overcome personal challenges.
Positive emotional and behavioral support services: Our highly qualified and compassionate staff take a holistic approach to student behavior based on evidence-based Applied Behavior Analysis.
We recognize that students' physical, sensory, emotional and social needs must be addressed before they can access the higher learning we believe they can achieve. Our program provides counseling and behavior support which focus on the functions of behavior and teach appropriate alternatives to maladaptive behavior.
