The Pyramid Retreat Center
In 1977, our founder Teddy Tollett acquired this sacred land situated between two cenotes of fresh spring water submerged in the nature of Wakulla Springs. He began the construction of this miraculous three story pyramid of concrete and steel, on the most auspicious of latitudes: the 30th, the same latitude as the Pyramids at Giza in Egypt. Over the course of 40 years of construction, the Pyramid became the majestic structure that stands today. Within the area, is surrounding forests with walking trails that thread throughout the natural beauty of the Florida's most biodiverse aquifers.
What is a cenote?
Cenotes in the area result from the collapse of limestone bedrock that exposes the subterranean river below. Another word for this is “karst window” which is an unroofed portion of a cavern, revealing part of a subterranean river of spring water perfect for swimming and diving. The larger spring pool is about 50 ft wide and 160 ft long. It is over 30 feet deep near the cavern at the north end of the pool.
Brief History: The Yucatán Peninsula has almost no rivers and only a few lakes, and those are often marshy. The widely distributed cenotes are the only perennial source of potable water and have long been the principal sources of water in much of the Yucatán Peninsula. Major Maya settlements required access to adequate water supplies, and therefore cities, including the famous Chichén Itzá, were built around these natural wells. Some cenotes like the Sacred Cenote in Chichén Itzá played an important role in Maya rites. Believing that these pools were gateways to the afterlife, the Maya sometimes threw valuable items into them.
Our Mission
The pyramid has served as an important cultural node for the greater Tallahassee community over the years, hosting many events celebrating and advancing sustainability, community, music, and the arts. Now, in efforts of continuing our rich tradition as a catalyst and site of cultural flowering, we facilitate monthly Full Moon gatherings, quarterly retreats, workshops, and Bed & Breakfast accommodations in order to share the rich bounty of this sacred space with the broader human tribe.
