Toll Gate Cafe

We’re more than a restaurant. We’re a piece of Hamilton’s past for you to taste in the present. We’re here to honor the history of this city and to carry on its tradition–a tradition of refreshing and rest.

The original name for Hamilton, Alabama, was Toll Gate. That’s where we get our name, Toll Gate Cafe. Toll Gate was more than just a town. Since its beginning in 1821, it was a refuge for travelers between Washington, D.C. and New Orleans.

Toll Gate was positioned on Andrew Jackson’s famous Military Road. Once travelers reached Toll Gate, they would pay a toll to help maintain the road, and then enjoy refreshments at the toll house. At the gate that intersected north/south traffic, a horn would sound for each passenger. That way the toll house would know how many people needed to be served.

The name of Toll Gate was changed to Hamilton in 1881, but the spirit of hospitality has remained. Here at Toll Gate Cafe, just sound a horn, and let us know what you need. We’re here to serve. Enjoy yourself. Enjoy rest and refreshing before you head on your way.
