We all know that eating right, exercising and getting proper rest is important for maintaining good health. I could give you a plan that outlines exactly what to do. The problem is that rarely works. Knowing what to do is simply not motivating enough for most people. If it were that easy everyone would be healthy and fit. This type of thinking has kept the diet industry in business for many years and left many of us disappointed time and again.

The truth is we aren’t likely to change our behavior until we know “why” something is good (or bad) for us. We can illustrate the difference between knowing “what” and knowing “why” with a simple example. Think about flipping on a light switch. You know that you just need to flip the switch and you will have light. You probably also know that electricity generates the light. But the average person has no idea why the electricity works. My goal is to teach you “why” you need to eat right, exercise and get proper rest. I believe in the saying, “Good health begins with knowledge.”

Another reason many of us find it difficult to make healthy choices is the fact that our bodies are designed to survive. Initially we aren’t really affected when we miss a meal, eat some junk food, don’t exercise for a while or don’t get enough rest. We may have some temporary discomfort from this behavior but that is all. We are still able to function normally. It’s a blessing and a curse. The blessing is that our bodies survive this type of mistreatment, often for a very long time. The curse is that we aren’t motivated to change our behavior. That is until the long term neglect results in severe health problems. By then it’s often too late.

Another challenge we face is learning to live a “balanced lifestyle”. You may be diligent about your exercise but make poor food choices. Or you may eat right but never get enough rest. In both situations you will eventually pay the price of poor health. I have found a simple visual to help you understand why living a balanced life is important. It’s called the Table of Success.

Think of a table with four legs. If all four legs are strong the table will stand even when a lot of pressure is placed on top. If one leg is weak the table might remain standing for a while. But when pressure is applied the table falls.

Life is that way. If our “table” has some weak legs we may be able to limp along for a while. But the moment pressure is placed on us we get depressed, stressed or sick.
