More about UC White Mountain Research Center

The White Mountain Research Center is a unit of the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability (IoES) and University of California Natural Reserve System (NRS).

WMRC has a 62-year history of fostering scientific achievement. It has played an important role in research pertaining to measurement of cosmic background radiation, physiology of breathing, ecophysiology of hibernation, paleoclimatic inference from ancient bristlecone pines, and more. Research in these and diverse other subjects continues today. The station has also hosted thousands of students in field classes and is internationally known as a site for field training in geology.

The Center's higher elevation facilities include a montane station in the bristlecone pine forest at Crooked Creek (3100 m), an alpine meadow station at Barcroft (3800 m), and a small summit station on White Mountain Peak (4340 m). The base station near the foot of the White Mountains near Bishop has been renamed the Owens Valley Station.

The balance of the WMRC staff are located on site in Bishop, California and surrounding areas. Emeritus Professor of Geography Antony Orme seves as WMRC's faculty director.
