University of New England School of Nurse Anesthesia

As the only program in Northern New England that awards a Master of Science in Nurse Anesthesia, we are proud of our rigorous curriculum and of our relationships with more than 30 hospitals across the region.

Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) are the primary providers of anesthesia services in rural America, allowing health care facilities in these medically underserved areas to offer obstetrical, surgical, and trauma stabilization services. CRNAs also constitute approximately half of the professionals qualified to administer anesthesia in urban areas.






As a CRNA you provide direct care to patients before, during, and after the procedure. Our M.S. in Nurse Anesthesia is a 27-month, two-phase program that positions you to succeed in a range of different clinical settings.

The first phase is conducted on our historic campus in the picturesque coastal city of Portland, Maine. During this initial eight months of classroom study, you gain a foundation in the sciences and focus on anesthesia theory and practice. We integrate evidence-based research into all of our courses. and your work culminates in a capstone project that you present on Research Day.

After you’ve gained a solid foundation in the discipline, you begin the 19-month hospital-based phase of the curriculum. Your clinical anesthesia training is supplemented during this time by lectures and seminars taught by CRNAs and anesthesiologists via a distance-education delivery model. Our relationships with hospitals throughout New England and beyond offer you a variety of rich, diverse learning experiences in large teaching hospitals, community hospitals, and critical access hospitals. You gain experience in both CRNA-only and anesthesia team practice environments.

With successful completion of the program, you are awarded a Master of Science in Nurse Anesthesia and are eligible to sit for the National Certifying Exam. To date, 100 percent of our students have passed the certifying exam in their first year following graduation, and 100 percent have successfully obtained employment.

Accreditation
Our program is accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, a specialized accrediting body recognized by the Council on Postsecondary Accreditation and the U.S. Department of Education. The School of Nurse Anesthesia is accredited through the spring of 2021, as we received the full 10-year accreditation term in June 2011.
