More about Vass Lions Club

The Vass Lions Club is affiliated with Lions Clubs International. Lions are an international network of 1.3 million men and women in 205 countries and geographic areas who work together to answer the needs that challenge communities around the world. The Vass Lions Club was chartered on February 16, 1943 when several prominent local business owners, farmers and citizens saw the need for a service club in the Vass, Cameron, and Lakeview communities.

During the early years the membership was relatively small and the individuals were mostly North Carolina natives from the Vass, Lakeview, and Cameron area. Membership demographics began to change in the 1980’s with the growth of the retirement community, Woodlake Country Club, in the Lobelia area which boosted membership to its current levels. Members are now a mix of North Carolina natives and residents that come from all over the United States and occasionally other countries. The proximity to Fort Bragg has encouraged an ecletic mix in the membership.

The Vass Lions Club recognizes it’s three Past District Governors Sid Scruggs, Terry Kerr, and Brad Logsdon. It is also proud to honor it’s most well known member, Sid Scruggs, the 2010-2011 International Lions Club President installed in Sidney, Australia on July 2, 2010 and now an International Lions Club Past President.Sid became the third Int'l President from North Carolina along with Jack Stickley and William Woolard from the Charlotte Central Lions Club. In addition, we would like to recognize the Aubrey Leon Keith Family. Aubrey was a Charter Member of the Vass Lions Club and served for 50 years. His sons, Leon & Phillip, and grandsons, Terry & Tony have also served along with nephews Linwood and Vick Keith.

The Vass Lions Club is proud of its involvement in its various local communities including our Community Action program for eyeglasses and exams, itc., Friends of the Vass Library, Back Pack Pals, school grants, scholarships, support of North Carolina Lions Foundation, Lions International Foundation and to its continued work for those less fortunate than ourselves. It recognizes the service from its many members over the seventy + years of the club’s existence. The dedication of those members, past and present, gives the club the opportunity to practice the Motto of Lionism -"WE SERVE".
