Western Carolina University EMS

Western Carolina University EMS (WCU EMS) is a student-run Basic Life Support (BLS) agency, with transport capabilities, that responds to medical emergencies on the WCU Campus in Cullowhee, North Carolina. WCU EMS works side by side with many different agencies, including local volunteer fire departments, police departments, and Advanced Life Support (ALS) providers. WCU EMS has and continues to promote our moto, "Students Helping Students since 1965". We are everyday students that attend school full-time and work as EMT-Basics simultaneously.The team consists of an EMS Chief, Assistant Chief, Captain, Sergeant(s), and part-time EMT-Basic Employees. The team does have supervision from the University Health Services Director. All protocols come from the North Carolina Office of EMS, and the medical director from nearby Harris Regional Hospital, a Division of Duke Life Point. WCU EMS is in service 24/7 during the Fall and Spring Semesters. We are not in service during the Summer mini-mesters. Full-time employees (officers) of the team are housed on the first floor of Robertson Residence Hall, a historic part of the WCU Campus. Part-time employees, while working their 24 hour shift, are provided a spaceous part-time room, supplied with a kitchen, bathroom/shower, beds, TVs, computers - all of the necessities for a college student. Currently, we operate out of a Type 3 ambulance and a Quick Response Vehicle (QRV).
