More about 143d Airlift Wing

The 143d AW traces its lineage back to 1915 when a group of RI residents purchased 2 Curtis Model "F" Flying Boats, one of which was assigned to the state national guard. From 1942 the unit performed varied missions and were assigned several aircraft including the P-47 Thunderbolt, P-51 Mustang, SA-16 Albatross, C-47 Skytrain, C-46 Commando, U-10 Helio Courier, HU-16, and the C-119G/: Flying Boxcar. In 1975 the unit became the 143d Tactical Airlift Group and was assigned the C-130A Hercules. They flew the A model until 1989 when they were selected to covert to the C-130E model. The 143d flew the C-130E model in many operations and deployments to include Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. The 143d AW became the first unit in the United States Air Force to receive the C-130J stretch model in December of 2001. The unit continued to fly the C-130E and the C-130J simutaneously into combat until retiring the C-130E in 2005. The 143d AW received its eight C-130J in June 2007 completing the fleet.
