More about Alpha Sigma Phi - Gamma Zeta Chapter, Bowling Green State University

Why Alpha Sigma Phi?
As a male student at Bowling Green State University, you have many opportunities to explore new experiences that will help you make friends, have fun, and grow as an individual. Regardless of what you’re looking for out of your years at BGSU, Alpha Sigma Phi can offer you means to achieve it. Although our campus has over 300 registered organizations, Alpha Sigma Phi can offer you something that no other organization can offer.

How?

Academics- Joining Alpha Sigma Phi will help you achieve academic excellence. Alpha Sigma Phi regularly places in the top three Inter-Fraternity Council fraternities for GPA and also has a higher GPA than non-Greek men. We keep our grades higher than the average students by offering a thorough scholarship program that caters to your needs which includes one-on-one meetings with our Scholarship Director in addition to incentives for positive academic performance. Alpha Sigma Phi recognizes that academics must be a top priority and do everything in our power to foster a positive learning environment.

Brotherhood – Alpha Sigma Phi prides itself on having a strong brotherhood. This not only means hosting various events throughout the year such as a Fantasy Football League, Pool Tournaments, and camping trips but truly being one another’s brother. Brotherhood is the basis upon what Alpha Sigma Phi was founded and is revealed in our purpose “To better the Man through the creation and perpetuation of brotherhood”. Alpha Sigma Phi is a group of men who stick together no matter the circumstances.

Membership Growth- Alpha Sigma Phi is one of the fasting growing Greek organizations on campus. Joining Alpha Sigma Phi offers you immediate opportunities for leadership development within the Greek and campus communities. With 50 active brothers we are amongst the largest on campus and we want you to be a part of our continued growth.

Campus Involvement- In Spring of 2011 Alpha Sigma Phi had 80% of our chapter involved in other student organizations including Dance Marathon, University Activities Organization, and Relay for Life, among others. Alpha Sigma Phi prides itself in not only developing our own organization, but also in helping develop the University as a whole by being active members of the BGSU Community. You will see Alpha Sigs giving campus tours, as Orientation Leaders, and leading several other campus organizations.

Intramural Sports- Alpha Sigma Phi placed second in the All-Sports Cup during the 2010-2011 academic year. Alpha Sig works to participate in as many sports as possible, often fielding more than one team allowing anyone who would like to participate to do so. We pride ourselves on being men of good sport but also competing for the win. During the 2011 – 2012 academic year, Alpha Sigma Phi won the championship in Ultimate Frisbee in addition to making playoffs in several other sports.

Community Service- Community service is a large part of your experience in Alpha Sigma Phi. During this past year we participated in several community service events including Adopt-a-Highway, landscaping at the Bowling Green Historical Society, and attending a senior citizen’s prom. Members not only participate in group activities planned by the fraternity but are also encouraged to seek out community service opportunities on their own that can be found all over the Bowling Green community. Alpha Sigma Phi truly values giving back to the community that has given it so much during our over 60 year history at Bowling Green.

Philanthropy- Alpha Sigma Phi is also dedicated to raising and donating money to several different causes. Our national philanthropic organization is LiveSTRONG and every year we hold various events to raise funds for this cause. During the 2011-2012 academic year we help a Mud Volleyball Tournament as well as sold hot chocolate on campus which raised nearly $1000 for LiveSTRONG. We also held an event entitled “Soups with Sigs” which raised over $300 to be used towards Christmas gifts for children with pediatric cancer. Additionally, Alpha Sigma Phi is known for our participation in BGSU’s Dance Marathon which raises money for Children’s Miracle Network. During the 2012 Dance Marathon Alpha Sigma Phi members raised nearly $8,000 for this cause. During the 2011 – 2012 year Alpha Sigma Phi raised a total of $9,654.75 for the various charities stated above.

Networking- Alpha Sigma Phi offers you various networking opportunities from meeting alumni who come back to various events throughout the year to meeting several other students on Bowling Green’s campus. Throughout the semester we have various events with several of the sororities on campus ranging from cookouts, capture the flag tournaments, and even hosting a Thanksgiving meal. Networking is an essential skill for post-graduation and Alpha Sigma Phi will give you many opportunities to improve on that skill during your time as a member.
