More about Alumni and Friends of Sts Cyril and Methodius Catholic School

In 1899, eight years after the founding of Saints Cyril and Methodius Church, its Czech/Moravian parishioners established a school for their children. The first teachers were the pastor, Reverend Francis Machan and Ms. Marcella Bartosh. In 1901 the Sisters of Divine Providence began their long affiliation of providing teachers for the school. According to the records in the archives of the Sisters of Divine Providence, ninety pupils were enrolled the first year. In the early days of the school’s existence the children walked as far as five miles to school. Later, as cars came into prominence, individual families supplied transportation for their children. Beginning with the year 1946, the parish supplied two buses for conveying children from the surrounding districts to the school.

Educational facilities grew from a small frame schoolhouse to larger brick buildings as student enrollment increased over time. In 1911, it was necessary to build a new school to accommodate all the students. The school was again replaced in 1946-1947 by the present two-story brick building. A fire in October 1951 sparked a remodeling of the interior.

Several years were marked with new changes to Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic School. In 1987, a Kindergarten program was incorporated and seventh and eighth grade were discontinued. 1987-1988 became the first year for the new K-6 program. The 1991-1992 school year started the prekindergarten 4 program. 2010-2011 marked the addition of the prekindergarten 3 program.
Although classes are no longer offered at SSCM, it's legacy continues on in the hearts and minds of the many people who walked the halls during the past 114 years.
