Ann Wilcox Memorial Golf Tournament

The Ann Wilcox Memorial Golf Tournament is held each year in memory of Ann Wilcox, a patient of cardiologist, Thomas Nygaard, M.D., and past president of the Mended Hearts Chapter 16 in the Lynchburg area.
The tournament is organized by a golf committee appointed by the Wilcox Memorial Fund Board. Members are recruited from Lynchburg and the counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, Campbell and Nelson.
Duties of golf committee members include recruiting team sponsors, hole sponsors, corporate sponsors, ideas for improving the tournament and helping with set-up the evening before the tournament and assisting on the day of the golf tournament.
The 2015 major sponsor was The Centra Stroobants Cardiology Research Group. (The Centra Inn is Dr. Nygaard’s vision, and has raised most of the funds).
Since the beginning, net funds have been used for the following:
$45,000 to help heart patients
$5,000 in sponsorships to a camp designated for children with heart prob-
lems
Nurse training seminars
$75,000 to support the Centra Inn, (Rosemary and George Dawson Patient
Inn) which is a hotel near the Lynchburg General Hospital campus for out
of town patients and their families.
$134,000 worth of scholarships provided to students seeking education in a
health related field.
Scholarships have been given to the following schools and institutions: Altavista High School, Amherst High School, Appomattox High School, Brookville High School, E.C Glass High School, Jefferson Forest High School, Heritage High School, Nelson County High School, Randolph Henry High School, Gretna High School, Rustburg High School, Staunton River High School and William Campbell High School. Home school students and college students from James Madison University, Lynchburg College and UVA Graduate School have also received scholarships.
