Artist & Craftsman Supply opened its original San Francisco store just down the hill from the San Francisco Art Institute in fall of 2006 in response to the schools and neighborhoods need for an affordable, local artist supply. Since moving into the neighborhood we have been hard at work cultivating the San Francisco art community by supporting students, schools, art organizations, and independent artists alike! We have become a resource not just for affordable supplies but also for advocating local art shows, galleries, guilds and more. We love to provide exceptional and educated customer service and pride ourselves on supporting our customers and community in the ever evolving world of art; we are artists serving artists.

In our efforts to continue to be a bigger and better artist resource we moved into a new home at 555 Pacific in the Historic Barbary Coast Hippodrome building on June 22, 2011. What used to be a Barbary Coast brothel, dance hall and theater is now filled with bright colors and art supplies. Our new location offers twice as many supplies as before including a new crafts section! We have expanded our fine art supplies to carry full lines of acrylic, oil, specialty paints (like One Shot and Milk Paint) and more; we also supply a variety of drawing, printmaking, bookbinding, model making, gilding, design, and architecture materials. For schools and families we have a kids section and stock fun, educational toys.

On June 1st, 2013 Alameda Paranormal Researchers conducted a paranormal investigation of our historic Hippodrome building at 555 Pacific Avenue, which dates back to the Barbary Coast days of the California Gold Rush. Their investigation concluded that we are an actively haunted location! Check out their website (www.alamedaparanormal.com) for more information or this YouTube video to see the evidence from their first investigation: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=lOJXGlp5Atg.
