OUR HISTORY…
While sciences and mathematics have existed in the educational framework of Auburn University since its beginning as East Alabama Male College in 1856, it was not until 1986 that those disciplines were officially brought together as the College of Sciences and Mathematics, often referred to as "COSAM."
The change began with the plan of then-President James Martin to “make Auburn University a major national university.” He called particular attention to the need for Auburn to respond to emerging fields to address the educational expectations of future students and the research frontiers where sciences and mathematics were the focal point.
The answer was to create the College of Sciences and Mathematics by combining the following departments:
From the College of Agriculture:
Department of Botany and Microbiology
Department of Zoology and Wildlife Sciences
From the School of Arts and Sciences:
Forestry and Biological Sciences
Department of Chemistry, Physics, and Geology
Division of Mathematics
Altered by a few changes since 1986, the College is now composed of the following 5 departments:
Biological Sciences
Chemistry and Biochemistry
Geosciences
Mathematics and Statistics
Physics
