Big or small, bike safety is for all! Here are a few helpful tips for bicycle safety for the Borough of Avalon.

AHLOA Bike Safety Points
General
• Remember that a parent may be held responsible for a child’s violation of traffic laws
• Do not practice tricks or fancy driving in a street
• Ride in the same direction as motor vehicular traffic
• Stay to the right roadside except:
o To make a left turn
o To avoid debris, drains or other hazards
o To pass a slower moving vehicle
• Use a brake that can make wheels skid while stopping on dry, level clean pavement
• Limit passengers to only the number the bicycle is designed to carry
• Do not ride bicycle with feet removed from the pedals or both hands removed from the handlebars
• Do not attach to any motor vehicle while riding

Helmets
• In NJ anyone under 17 years of age riding a bicycle must wear a helmet.
• State law requires anyone under 17 to wear a helmet when roller skating or skateboarding.
• Everyone should wear a helmet, regardless of age.
• A child who violates the law will be warned of the violation and the parent or guardian may be fined up to $25 for the first offense and up to $100 for a subsequent offense

Registration
• Consider registering your bike at the Avalon Police Department
• “Obey all state and local bicycle riding laws. The Avalon Police Department will be adhering to New Jersey Statute Title 39. If found guilty of violation, the bicyclist may incur points on their motor vehicle license, which can impact vehicle insurance premiums.”

Location
• Riding bicycles on Dune Drive sidewalks in the Business District is prohibited.
• Walking bicycles is permitted.
• Bicycles are not permitted on the Boardwalk after 10am
• Where provided, use bikeways


Other Laws
• In darkness the following is required
o A front white headlamp that is seen at least 500 feet away
o A rear lamp with a red light seen 500 feet away
o A red reflector mounted on the rear visible from 300 feet
• A bell or other audible device that can be heard at least 100 feet away is required
o Do no use a siren or a whistle
