Barbara Hawkins Elementary is an attractive, well-maintained facility with a dedicated staff and a “family” type atmosphere. The school was constructed in 1960 and has undergone two major additions and renovations. Barbara Hawkins Elementary, originally called North Carol City Elementary, consists of a regular elementary with a resource Gifted program. There are approximately 368 students enrolled (90% Black/Non Hispanic, 9% Hispanic, 1% other) in grades pre-kindergarten through grade five. Most of the students are economically disadvantaged as evidenced by the fact that 94% receive free or reduced price meals. Instruction is provided by a highly trained staff of 44 full and 9 part-time employees. The teachers, paraprofessionals and administrators are committed to providing appropriate and challenging educational programs for our students.
